Little known fact . . .

Do you remember where you were when Elvis died? I sure do. I was in Door County, Wisconsin (if you haven't been there it's worth a visit) on vacation with my Aunt & Uncle and my two little cousins. I should say adorable little cousins, right Jana? We stayed in a cabin in the woods and spent our days on the beaches of Lake Michigan. My uncle went into town (Ephraim, WI) to get a newspaper one morning and came back with the news that Elvis had died. I remember thinking of my mom, a true Elvis fan, and wondering if she had heard.

I think I will always remember today too . . . where I was when I heard that Farrah Fawcett, and then Michael Jackson, had died. I learned about Farrah online over lunch and I wasn't surprised since I had heard in recent days that she was losing her battle with cancer. After work I stopped at our local grocery store and while I was still in the car my daughter called to tell me that she had just heard on the radio that Michael Jackson had died. I was really surprised and rushed home to catch the news.

Both Farrah and Michael had interesting lives and careers. I was a fan of Charlie's Angels and later was impressed with Farrah's performance in The Buring Bed. I grew up listening to Michael Jackson and watching his videos - what a talent.

I really didn't have anything in common with Michael Jackson - I'm not a great dancer, I've never had a monkey for a pet, I've never been seen out in public wearing a mask. I do like to wear gloves sometimes, but that's as close as we get.

Farrah and I, on the other hand, do have something in common because we were both born on February 2nd. Not the same year, but like Michael said, "two out of three ain't bad". No wait, that was Meatloaf.

Farrah . . . Michael . . . RIP.

My reaction to hearing that Michael Jackson had died was, "You're kidding -- he can't die!" He's always been such a given, a real cultural icon. I've never been a fan or a follower of his, but the world felt complete with his talent and weirdness. I do have a connection to MJ, as I was news editor of the weekly paper in Santa Maria, where his trial took place. I remember the crazed fans gathering at the courthouse gates hoping to get a glimpse of the superstar...

That's right... adorable, amazing, fantastic, brilliant, wonderful and talented cousin that I am, I will leave you with 2 thoughts: RIP MJ and Farrah, and... I'm a doll and you're a nut! :) Oh... and contrary to popular family belief, my hubby was NOT one of MJ's doctors but he was at the hospital when it all happened. He told me so! :)
